MariNaomi is the author and illustrator of the award-winning graphic memoir Kiss & Tell: A Romantic Resume, the Eisner-nominated Dragon’s Breath and Other True Stories, and the upcoming Turning Japanese. Her work has appeared in over sixty print anthologies, featured in such places as Bitch Magazine, LA Review of Books, Truth-out, XOJane, Buzzfeed and more. Mari’s work on the Rumpus won a SPACE Prize and an honorable mention in Houghton Mifflin’s Best American Comics 2013. Mari is also the creator and curator of the Cartoonists of Color Database and the LGBTQ Cartoonists Database.

Andrew Ramirez has published fiction and poetry in Slake: Los Angeles, If & When, Literature for Life, Gumbo, among others, as well as being a featured writer for The New Short Fiction Series. He was born in El Paso, Texas and educated at University of Southern California. He lives in Los Angeles

Craig McLaughlin is a teacher and author of creative nonfiction, an award-winning journalist, and a nationally recognized storyteller. He holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MA in Journalism from UC Berkeley and taught creative nonfiction at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. A former editor of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, he received numerous awards as a reporter and memoirist. The songs of the knownothings transmit from an eternal underground station deep beneath the streets of east Hollywood. here the censors are gagged the spellcheck turned off the autotune disengaged and all the girls in the chorus are lolling about outside the stage door, smoking a joint and cursing gleefully. in the corridors the cats rove all night, heedless of any grid… the knownothings album “slummers of lust” will be released later this year.

Melissa Chadburn has written for Guernica, Buzzfeed, Poets & Writers, Salon, McSweeney’s, Tin House, The Rumpus, American Public Media’s Marketplace, Al Jazeera America and dozens other places. Her essay, “The Throwaways,” received notable mention in Best American Essays and Best American Nonrequired Reading. Her first novel, A Tiny Upward Shove, is forthcoming with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Seth Fischer is a writer and editor whose writing has appeared in Best Sex Writing, PANK, The Rumpus, Guernica, and elsewhere, and his essay “Notes from a Unicorn” has been listed as notable in The Best American Essays. He has received fellowships from Lambda Literary’s Emerging Voices Program, Jentel, and Woodstock Byrdcliffe, and he teaches at Antioch University Los Angeles and Writing Workshops Los Angeles. Kita Shantiris’ poetry has appeared in Ambit, Crannóg, Poetry, Quarterly West, The Fish Anthology, The Moth, Slipstream, Wisconsin Review and other journals. One of three poets featured in The Border (Bombshelter Press 1984), she also had two poems anthologized in The Faber Book of Movie Verse (Faber & Faber 1993). In 2012, Kita received 2nd Prize in the Ballymaloe International Poetry Contest judged by Leontia Flynn. She twice has been Runner-Up in Fish Publishing’s contest judged by Brian Turner (2011) and Ruth Padel (2014). In her other life, psychologist Dr. Kita S. Kym Ghee is a Los Angeles based writer and photographer.  Formerly a music journalist,  Kym has recently been working on a collection of short stories in the genre of personal narrative that explore life in L.A.’s Koreatown. Titled “Tawdry Tales on the Road to Sanity”  the often humorous and raw collection explores themes of loss, addiction,sex, love and personal triumph.  Tonight Kym will be reading “The Beef Jerky Criminal” from “Tawdry Tales  on the Road to Sanity.”

Keith Niles is a widely published Los Angeles poet. He honed his craft during a potent stretch writing, performing and hosting shows in dive bars in East Hollywood. His most recent book, “The Thousand Poems (Vol. 1)” is a product of those wild years. A second volume is slated to be released in 2015.  Most recently, Niles has recorded a full length album of genre-defying music with his band The Knownothings.

Tawny Ellis has a distinctive quality rooted in sweet Southern folk. A Savannah, GA native, Ellis traveled extensively before meeting collaborator Gio Loria, who along with her brings lush melodies and lyrical storytelling their music. Ellis beyond being a considerable musical talent is an accomplished sculptor with an ancestral connection to one of the world’s most famous sculptors/painters, Edgar Degas. The Work is Hell tour  featuring: Brandon Christopher, author of “The Job Pirate”.

Brandon Christopher grew up in Los Angeles, and his book “Job Pirate”, is written with wit, panache and ruthless honesty about two dozen of the more than 82 “crappy” jobs he has worked over the last 20 years. These include stints as a mortuary driver, a florist, a mover, a door-to-door water purifier salesman, an  entertainment industry chauffeur, a plumber, a sales clerk, a rehab hotline operator, and the only straight writer at a gay porn magazine publisher.

Tom Stern is the writer/director of the feature films Half-Dragon Sanchez and This Is A Business. His films have played festivals across the United States and in Europe. Tom holds a BA in Philosophy from Eckerd College and an MFA in Film Production from Chapman University. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Cheryl, and his daughter, Ramona. Tom’s first novel is “Sutterfeld, You Are Not a Hero”.

Larry Duncan currently lives in Long Beach, CA. Where he writes, drinks, and wakes up at an ungodly hour to go to work every day. His poetry and fiction has appeared in various print and online publications, including the Mas Tequila Review, Emerge Literary Journal, Citizens for Decent Literature, the Muddy River Poetry Review, Mused, and the Fat City Review.

Erin Parker started out as an English major, fell in love with Art History, and ended up in art school studying commercial Interior Design.  The best job she ever had was as a Fantasyland Attractions Hostess at Disneyland.  That’s a fancy way of saying she was a ride operator on It’s A Small World, the Matterhorn and Storybookland.  Her first collection of short stories is coming out in late 2015 from Unknown Press.

Laurel Ann Bogen is the author of ten books of poetry and short fiction. Since 1990 she has been an instructor in the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension where she received the Outstanding Instructor of the Year Award in 2008. In 2016, Red Hen Press will publish All of the Above: New and Selected Poems, 1975-2015. She is a founding member of the performance trio Nearly Fatal Women, which broke (or tied) attendance records for Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center in 2014.

 

Elena Karina Byrne is an editor, Poetry Consultant / Moderator for The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Contributing Editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books, and Literary Programs Director for The Ruskin Art Club. She is the former Regional Director of the Poetry Society of America. Publications include a Pushcart Prize, Best American Poetry, Yale Review, Paris Review, Verse & APR. Books include: The Flammable Bird, MASQUE and the forthcoming Squander and Voyeur Hour: Meditations on Poetry, Art and Desire.

 

Jawanza Dumisani is a native Detroiter whose first full-length collection is Black Raising Cane Over Red (Glover Lane Press, 2014). Since joining The World Stage Anassi Writer’s in 1997, he earned a scholarship in ’03 and studied with Suzanne Lummis at the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program.  In ’05 he received THE PEN AWARD. He served as Director of Literary Programming at The World Stage from 2005 to 2011. He serves as Executive Director of Lady Between The Lines Art Agency.

 

Liz González is a fourth generation Southern Californian. Her poetry, fiction, and memoirs have appeared in numerous literary journals, periodicals, and anthologies. She is the author of the limited edition chapbook Beneath Bone, published by Manifest Press (2000). Liz earned an M.F.A. in English and Creative Writing at Mills College and BA in Theatre Arts: Acting and Directing at California State University, Los Angeles.

 

Gerald Locklin is Professor Emeritus of English, California State University, Long Beach.  His Books from 2013 include Deep Meanings (Presa Press), three novellas  (Spout Hill Press), and  Le Dernier des Damnes (13 eNote Editions, Paris).  He is archived by the CSULB Library Special Collections and is the subject of A Critical Introduction to Gerald Locklin, edited by Michael Basinski.

 Aida Zilelian is the first time author of The Legacy of Lost Things. The book follows three generations of a family of Armenian immigrants living in the United States, as they struggle with one another and against the Old World expectations of their community. Aida is a New York writer and English teacher. She has been published in over twenty-five literary journals and several anthologies. She is also the curator of Boundless Tales, a reading series in Queens, NY. She is currently writing a collection of short stories. This is her first published novel and was the recipient of the 2014 Tololyan Literary Award.

Lory Bedikian received her BA from UCLA with an emphasis in creative writing and her MFA in poetry from the University of Oregon. Her poems have been published in multiple journals, including Connecticut Review, Portland Review, Poetry International, Poet Lore and Heliotrope. Her work has also been included in Blue Arc West: An Anthology of California Poets. She is the author of THE BOOK OF LAMENTING (Anhinga Press, 2011), whichreceived the 2010 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. She teaches poetry workshops in Los Angeles.

Anto (THE Wordsmith) Boghokian was born and raised in Kuwait.  He spent summer months in the Lebanese countryside of Anjar. The 1990 events of the Gulf War made the United States his permanent home. He has experienced firsthand the 21-year struggle of gaining residency in the U.S.  Anto’s major struggles became the springboard he uses to bring his characters & poetry to life.

Lory Tatoulian is an award-winning comedic actress and playwright. For the past five years she has written, performed and produced  seven different installments of The Big Bad Armo Show which has been staged across the country, The Symphony Space in New York (Off-Broadway), Fort Mason Theater in San Francisco, San Diego Repertory Theater and the Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles. She has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for her work in the theater and  has received three proclamations from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, California State Assemblyman Kevin DeLeon and California State Assemblyman Mike Gatto for her contributions to theater in Los Angeles. Tatoulian studies at The Groundlings Theater and Teaches dramatic arts at Eliot Middle School.

Karineh Mahdessian learned English by reading Nancy Drew books and watching Married with Children. She has a great affinity for really large earrings. She enjoys tacos from highland park taco trucks. She will challenge anyone to a thumb wrestling match. anytime. anyplace. She always has her chess set riding around in the trunk of her car. And she is absolutely in love with haikus. She hosts La Palabra at Avenue 50 Studios in Highland Park.

Ara Dabandjian is the multi-instrumentalist music director of the world fusion ensemble Element Band. His compositions and arrangements deliver unique expression of folk-fusion by incorporating deft instrumentation, lush vocal harmonies, and rich multi-ethnic musical styles that has landed him at the Kodak Theatre, Ford Amphitheatre, Hollywood Bowl, Nokia Theater and Skirball Cultural Center. His most recent works have traces of gypsy jazz, which suggest a different type of fusion for his future endeavors.

E. Amato is a spoken word artist, poet, writer, producer, filmmaker, editor of the Zestyverse, and publisher at Zesty Pubs, she keeps herself busy. She’s also available for workshops and consulting.

Nathan Earl Rose is a poet, cinemamaker, media theorist, songbird, raconteur, freelance pediatrician, dj, & zen master.  He is a co-founder of the Los Angeles College Of Pataphysics. And it is highly probable he is laughing about something unrelated as you are reading this right now.

Franki Elliot, the critically acclaimed author of “Piano Rats”, has been known for writing typewriter stories on the spot for strangers around the country. The stories have been published in a beautiful, tear out postcard book called “ Kiss as Many Women as You Can” by Curbside Splendor Publishing.

Lisa Douglass is a native Los Angelean born where the Shakespeare Bridge meets the Silverlake border. Her influences include, bad boys and tragedy, alcohol. She earned an MFA at UC Irvine and won the Shirley Collier prize for her book “No Tell Motel”.

Jim Ruland is the author of the short story collection Big Lonesome and co-author with Scott Campbell, Jr. of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch of Giving the Finger. His debut novel is Forest of Fortune, by Tyrus Press. And on occasion you can read a book review of his with the LA Times or attend his popular reading series called Vermin.

Steve Westbrook is an associate professor of English at California State University Fullerton, where he teaches courses is rhetoric, poetics, and cultural studies, and where he serves as faculty advisor for DASH Literary Journal. His poetry, which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, has appeared most recently in Slab, Rattle, Pank, The Los Angeles Review, Literal Latte, The Great American Literary Magazine, Good Foot, and Clementine. Westbrook’s chapbook, Vox Americana is forthcoming from Orange Monkey Publishing.

William Hillyard For approximately 48 hours, William Hillyard was executive producer of “Wonder Valley,” a documentary TV project inspired by his essays set in California’s desert fringe. Prior to that and since, he’s been unemployed.

Sheila J Sadr is a member of the Slam Poetry Team at Cal State Long Beach. She’s featured at the Definitive Soapbox and CSULB’s Poets lounge. She happily facilitates an open poetry workshop at Long Beach State. J. Sadr loves exploring the world around her, volunteering for various philanthropies, and eating ramen noodles. She will also most likely know which random television show you are referencing. J. Sadr is currently pursuing her B.A. in Creative Writing and Comparative World Literature with an emphasis in cultural studies. Presently, she is working on a YouTube channel called “The Book Club” set to debut in February. Michael McBride is a novelist, actor and security guard. Michael grew up in scenic northern California but now lives with his wife and two sons in the parched Los Angeles neighborhood of Mt. Washington. He enjoys the view from his deck, meals with family and friends, and rooting against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Michael is currently studying fiction at UCR’s low res MFA in Palm Springs. He graduated with a BA in from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television where he studied acting and playwriting.

Caitlin Cutt is from Long Beach, and she’s currently putting her degree in Comparative World Literature to good use by embarking on a career in stand-up comedy. She got her start at Flapper’s Burbank, and is gaining steam performing all over the Los Angeles comedy scene. Currently, Caitlin´s career goals are simple: hosting The Tonight Show and getting the opportunity to finally hug Steve Martin who, unbeknownst to him, basically raised her via airwaves…and of course, she loves working on story-based material.

Lisa Douglass is influenced by bad boys and tragedy, alcohol and fine literature. She is also an actress and a writer with an MFA in fiction from UC Irvine.

Chris Wells is an award winning writer/performer who divides his time between New York and Los Angeles. As host of The Secret City, an Obie-award winning gathering for artists and art lovers, Wells curates, produces and emcees a monthly event that is part salon, part cabaret and part ceremony. As a writer, Wells creates original solo work and first person stories about his life. He’s currently compiling a series of his stories into a collection entitled, I’m About To Touch You. www.thesecretcity.org

Maggie Rowe co-produces the long-running stage hit Sit ‘n Spin with Jill Soloway at the Comedy Central Space. For more info, check outwww.sitnspin.org. She also created and produced Hollywood Hellhouse and wrote the short Burn Baby Burn currently up on ifilms. She has been a commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered and is currently writing on Oxygen’s Big Girl’s Don’t.

Ben Loory lives in Los Angeles, in a house on top of a hill. He was born in Dover, New Jersey, and is a graduate of Harvard College. In November 2008, his story “Photographs” was a finalist in the Glimmer Train Short Story Award for New Writers Contest. Since then his fables and tales have appeared online and in print in journals and magazines of all shapes and sizes, ranging from literary to fantasy, humor to horror, young adult to SF to sports-related and more.

Brandon Jordan Brown  was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in the South. He moved to California to pursue his MA in theology and currently lives in Los Angeles. Brandon is a 2014 PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellow, and his work has been published or is forthcoming in The Bakery, Day One, decomP and The Rufous City Review. Chris Joyner is a sought after keyboardist that can frequently be seen performing on stage all over the world with artists such as Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne, Tom Morello, Shelby Lynne, The Wallflowers and The Madden Brothers to name a few. Karen Rizzo has spent a number of years writing non-fiction for magazines and newspapers, mostly about her family and friends.  She’s the author of THINGS TO BRING, SH#!T TO DO… a non-fiction Book Sense/IndieBound Best Pick.  Famous Baby is her debut novel. Said friends and family are relieved she’s writing fiction.

Marsha de la O’s first book of poetry, Black Hope, won the New Issues Press Poetry Prize and a Small Press Editor’s Choice Award. She won the dA Poetry Award. She has published in journals such as Barrow Street, Passages North, Solo, and Third Coast.

Jed Myers lives in Seattle, Washington. Two of his poetry collections, The Nameless (Finishing Line Press) and Watching the Perseids (winner of the 2013 Sacramento Poetry Center Book Award), were released in 2014. He won the 2012 Mary C. Mohr Editors’ Award offered by Southern Indiana Review, and received the 2013 Literal Latte Poetry Award. The club is a two story black brick building 1/3 rd of a block below Hollywood Bl. There are parking lots on Selma as well as Cahuenga. Meters need to be fed till 8pm. Avoid Cahuenga street parking. The signs are deceptive.
